Optos Works with Volk Optical on Targeted Ophthalmoscopy Program

6/5/2006

MARLBOROUGH, MA, June 5, 2006 – Optos is pleased to announce it is partnering with Volk Optical on a new targeted ophthalmoscopy program. The goal of the program is to use the optomap ® Retinal Exam in conjunction with other traditional methods of ophthalmoscopy, such as a traditional slit lamp examination, Binocular Indirect Ophthalmoscopy, and direct ophthalmoscopy to provide a very thorough and effective retinal exam.

As part of this program, Optos has developed an instructional video that illustrates the clinically proven targeted ophthalmoscopy technique, and how by combining the optomap with other forms of ophthalmoscopy results in an effective patient educational examination.  With the introduction of the new Digital Series lenses, Volk is providing a new level of image quality for the traditional slit lamp examination previously unattainable in any non contact lens.  The Digital Series lenses provide unique image characteristics including true 3D view of the optic disc, enabling early detection  of glaucoma and broad retinal images out to the vortex, even through small pupils.

“The use of the optomap® Retinal Exam, as one of several ophthalmoscopy tools, virtually eliminates the risk of missing a disorder of the retina and/or choroid,” said Jerome Sherman, OD, FAAO.   “The optomap® Retinal Exam is the best first step in a comprehensive fundus exam.  Based on the information seen on the image, I can then decide what approach to take to further investigate a patient’s condition and determine the appropriate treatment.”

Targeted Ophthalmoscopy involves three steps: discovering the condition of the retina using the optomap® Retinal Exam to capture an ultra-widefield view, diagnosing the condition by focusing on a specific area of interest with the Optos v2 software and second form of ophthalmoscopy like a slit lamp and Volk Lens, and determining the next best steps for the patient using all of the available information.  The instructional video illustrates the technique, explains how Targeted Ophthalmoscopy fits seamlessly into practices, aids patient flow, and details the increased sensitivity established using the technique.
