Retinal hole case study

An ophthalmologist stopped by the Optos exhibit booth at AAO 2003 in Anaheim CA for a demonstration of the optomap technology. During his imaging session, he inquired about eyesteering capabilities. He was imaged in upgaze and the optomap Retinal Exam indicated a retinal hole in the superior field of his right eye.

The doctor dilated his right eye and went to visit one of the fundus photography exhibit booths, which proceeded to image his right eye, searching for the pathology. None was found on fundus photography even when the location of the pathology was known. Concerned about the pathology displayed on the optomap Retinal Exam, the doctor went to a colleague for a binocular indirect examination which resulted in laser treatment of the retinal holes in the superior field of his right eye. The ophthalmologist returned to the Optos exhibit booth to be imaged again so he could see the laser treatment. He admitted that he had been experiencing symptoms prior to the discovery of the retinal holes. Thankful and amazed by our technology, the doctor is anxious to have the optomap in his office!
