Optos Announces 2000 Global Customer

13.12.2005

Dunfermline, Scotland, December 13, 2005 – Optos plc today announced its 2000th global customer to install its platform Panoramic200 (P200) retinal imaging device which produces the Optomap® Retinal Exam – Dr. Udo Rothe in Würzburg, Germany. Optos is a leading medical technology company for the design, development manufacture and marketing of retinal imaging devices. The P200 is the world’s first and only ophthalmic device capable of producing a high resolution, digital wide-field image of up to 200 degrees or 80% of the retina in a single capture.

“I am pleased to be named Optos’ 2000th global customer. The Optomap Retinal Exam is a wonderful product that has significantly contributed to the clinical standard of care at my practice,” said Dr. Rothe. “My patients are very excited about this new technology and the opportunity to quickly and easily have an exam that enables me to either confirm their ocular and overall health or identify whether eye or systemic disease is evident, and at an earlier or preventative stage.”

The Optomap Retinal Exam provides optometrists and ophthalmologists with clinically useful information that facilitates the early detection of eye and non-eye related diseases that may first appear in the retina. At a current rate of approximately 10,000 per day, over 5.75 million Optomap Retinal Exams have been performed to date.

“Our growth, marked by the addition of our 2000th global customer, demonstrates that eye-care professionals value our retinal imaging products – we are proud of this milestone.” said Stephane Sallmard, chief executive officer of Optos, plc. “Use of our Optomap retinal image product in preventative care continues to support practitioners in all of our markets in detecting and diagnosing eye and systemic conditions and diseases at an earlier stage.”

The Optomap Retinal Exam is an integral first step in the clinical evaluation of every patient. Optos’ technology incorporates a patented scanning laser system that utilizes ellipsoidal mirror technology. The Optomap image is captured in 0.25 seconds. Optos has designed its P200 device with a single imaging platform capability so that it can incorporate future retinal imaging product developments and new product applications. Optos has recently added two further products to its core Optomap product: Optomap Plus Medical Retinal Exam for insurance reimbursement procedures was introduced in 2005 and Optomap fa dynamic ultra-widefield angiography, which the Company anticipates commercializing in 2006.
